Duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Manager – Safety, Health & Environment (SHE)
i. Coordinate Safety Health and Environmental Excellence activities throughout UTTL. Assist management in SHE programmes, reporting, policies and training matters as required.
ii. Develop a comprehensive Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, USLP (in line with the Global Template) outlining all the current USLP initiatives in UTTL, project milestones, the KPI’s and the progress of each of this initiative. Present monthly updates to the USLP steering team
iii. Conduct a deep dive review on each of our Key USLP initiatives and propose improvements for implementation
iv. Engage with key customers and suppliers to build a strategic partnership in USLP initiatives.
v. Ensure that all incidents are promptly reported and investigated according to the set procedures. Recommend and define actions to prevent reoccurrence and assign responsible persons to take the actions within the agreed time scale.
vi. Local Reporting: Produce “Monthly Statistics” report for UTTL sites, submitting them on time to become part of the monthly Performance Review report including figures needed in corporate and regional safety performance monitoring. Monthly and Quarterly Cluster reporting for KPIs, leading indicator reports, Environmental scorecards.
vii. SHE Processes implementation, review and training
viii. Govern SHE reporting system monthly update regionally and locally. This includes OS, Env KPIs, Training, Sub-Committees; SIREN and hot spots monthly progress and actions.
ix. Assist with preparation and the presentation of safety training programs for UTTL. Conduct training to all staff related to Safety as per scheduled by the training coordinator on site.
x. Implement SHE related projects raised from risk assessment, safety audits, hazard reports and incident investigation if appropriate and assist others as appropriate with the implementation of safety related projects and monitor progress.
xi. Develop SHE procedures and make timely update as a result from any changes of processes and operations or for improvement.
xii. Coordinate with other departments in developing their safety rules and procedures and ensure proper implementation through Policy-Procedure sub-committee.
xiii. Co-ordinate management and implementation of SHE related programs: – e.g. BeSafE; Zero NHW to landfill; STOP Program; Hazard Reporting; Planned Inspection; PTW System; LOTO; Eco-efficiency; etc. Ensure that monitoring systems are in place (through trackers) and communicate KPI to management.
xiv. Monitor progress of the site Improvement Programs and communicate updated status to management team during Management Review Meetings.
xv. Coordinate all Unilever and Local Safety Standards requirements to UTTL management team and work out its implementation.
xvi. Ensure yearly review meetings to discuss UTTL SHE performance and improvement plans. Review and update action plans for the each preceding year.
xvii. Carry out updates of all records and documents related to PAR/FWS and system as result of any internal and surveillance audits.
Relevant Skills and Experience
• Manufacturing and/or Engineering experience or should have a “Safety” working knowledge or relevant degree with two years working experience.
• Effective communication and influencing skills
• Good spoken/written English and Swahili languages
• Good computer skills
• Implementing SHE Framework and Specific Standards
• Measuring and communicating SHE performance
• Ensuring compliance with local regulatory requirements
• Flexibility with work hours depending upon business needs
• Experience in Supply Chain operations
• Proven track record of analytical thinking and project management
• Excellent trainer capabilities
