Main Responsibilities include:
• To coordinate assignment of briefs to advocates;
• To extract information from briefs for the purpose of strategic litigation;
• To develop and update a simple training program for client in-take and counseling aimed at volunteers and paralegals;
• To oversee the work of staff, volunteers, paralegals at national and chapter level, conducting site visits as needed;
• To ensure compliance with the Code of Conduct for Legal Aid Providers;,
• To report quarterly on the quantity and nature of briefs received, assigned, and declined, and maintain detailed database of assigned, briefs e.g. advocate, dates, status;
• To establish and maintain links with prisons personnel and a referral mechanism/system for prisoners/remandees in need of legal aid;
• To maintain links with the Legal Aid Providers to ensure effective cross-communication and an efficient referral system;
• To maintain links with the Legal Aid Network for national legal aid issues, especially issues relating to formal incorporation of paralegals;
• To identify funding opportunities and prepare funding proposals for the Legal Aid program;
• To manage Legal Aid Program grants and expenditures.
Qualifications:
• A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from a reputable/accredited institution.
• Possession of a Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
• Preferably, an Advocate with litigation experience.
• At least 3 years progressive, professional working experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to using law progressively to advance public interest issues.
• Experience in fundraising.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
• Ability to work efficiently under pressure and on a wide range of tasks.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Willingness to travel extensively.
• Ability to work under minimum supervision and as a member of a team.
• Ability to listen and communicate clearly and effectively with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
